Definition of Heterocyclic Compound

A heterocyclic compound is also known as heterocycle and it is defined as the prominent group of chemical compounds that are organic and the atoms in their molecules are in the form of a ringed structure. The ring has one atom of an element other than the carbon atom.

Heterocyclic compounds have a structure similar to that of cyclic organic compounds but a different element is being incorporated into the cycle which gives them unique chemical and physical properties. Heterocyclic chemistry is the branch of organic chemistry that majorly deals with the synthesis, significance, and properties of heterocyclic compounds.
