Definition of Hydroboration Oxidation

The hydroboration oxidation reaction is studied in the field of organic chemistry and it is a chemical reaction in which two steps are involved i.e. hydroboration and oxidation reaction. It is a hydration reaction (addition of water molecule) through which alcohol is formed from an alkene. In the place of the double bond of an alkene, hydrogen ion and hydroxide ion are added.

This reaction does not follow markovnikov’s rule as hydroxide ion is received by the less substituted carbon of the alkene. This reaction has very significance in labs because it is used to determine the stereoselectivity and regioselectivity of alkenes.
