Monozygotic twins are those twins which are identical to each other, hence they are also known as identical twins. They are termed monozygotic as they arise from one zygote only. The single egg is fertilized by a single sperm and continuously divide and multiplicate in number and is then divided into two zygotes at the early embryonic stage.
Such types of twins have all of their genes shared and they are always of the same sex. Although, their genetic material is the same yet they have different characteristics which are the result of the influence of environmental factors.
