Definition of Nucleolus

The nucleolus is a region present inside the nucleus of a cell that is responsible for producing and assembling the ribosomal RNAs of a cell. The region of the nucleus where the nucleolus is present contains no genetic material. When the ribosomal RNAs have got assembled, they are transported to the cytoplasm where they become part of ribosomes and start synthesizing the protein molecules.

The nuclear pores allow the transportation of these RNAs into the cell’s cytoplasm. These rRNAs do not become the part of protein themselves but serve the role of guiding the messenger RNAs through the ribosomes and hence indirectly take part in the process of translation (protein formation).
