Definition of Origin Of Replication

The origin of replication is a specific sequence that exists in the genome and it serves the purpose of initiating the process of replication. The DNA is replicated in a semiconservative manner and it is divided equally among the daughter cells so that they may receive the full complement of the chromosomes.

There are three different structures that characterize the origin of replication. They are characterized by the presence of sites at which the initiation and auxiliary proteins bind, by the presence of an unwound region of adenine-thymine and by the structures that are involved in initiating the process.
