Definition of Oxidative Stress



Oxidative stress is actually a disproportion between the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the natural anti-oxidant capability of the system. By the antioxidant activity, the body is able to get rid of the harmful substances and hence, neutralizes the damage they have caused.

 


When the cells undergo some disturbance, they tend to produce peroxides and free radicals that result in damaging the biomolecules i.e., lipids, proteins and DNA. These chemical species cause breaks in the strands of DNA and damages the nitrogenous bases.

 


The reactive oxygen species are known to be the harmful products which are formed by the mitochondria under the aerobic metabolic process and are involved in causing a number of diseases. But now, it has been reported that they play a significant role in regulating cell signaling as well as homeostasis.

 


The oxidative stress disrupts the normal cell functioning and is involved in a large number of diseases such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cancers, atherosclerosis etc.
