Definition of Primer/ Rna Primer

A primer is a sequence of nucleic acids that is relatively short and it serves the role of providing a starting point for the synthesis of DNA. In the case of living organisms, the short sequences of RNA tend to play the role of primer. These primers are synthesized before the process of DNA replication by an enzyme which is known as primase and it is a type of RNA polymerase.

The primers are the primary molecules in the replication process and hence they lay the foundation of it. They are removed from the forming DNA before the completion of the process and the gaps they leave, get filled with DNA polymerases. These primers can be synthesized in the labs too and they are commonly used in PCR in order to copy the strands of DNA.
