Definition of Revenue Bonds

A revenue bond is a type of municipal bond that is issued by authorities to raise capital for funding large projects. Revenue bonds are called revenue bonds because the interest income is secured by the revenue stream generated by the project for which it was issued or from projects that are already generating revenues.

There are further types of revenue bonds such as airport revenue bonds that are backed by the revenues generated by the airport. Another type is utility revenue bonds that are issued to fund utility projects and are backed by the utility collections to pay bondholders.
