Definition of Ribozyme

The ribozymes are known as the ribonucleic acid enzymes and they serve the role of catalyzing specific chemical reactions. They work in a manner almost similar to the protein enzymes. The ribozymes are also termed as catalytic RNA and they are found in the ribosomes where they tend to link the amino acids together in order to form a chain of proteins.

The ribozymes are also involved in other important reactions like the splicing of RNA, biosynthesis of tRNA, and in the replication process of viruses. The ribozyme was first discovered and studied in the 1980s and its discovery enabled the researchers to determine the function it as a genetic material as well as a catalyst.
