Definition of Semiconservative Model



The semiconservative replication model states that when the two strands of DNA are separated during the process of replication, then each strand serves as a template in order to form a new DNA strand which is complementary to the template strand. This shows that the newly formed double helix of DNA is composed of one old and one new strand of DNA.

 


Hence, the replication of DNA which happens during the S phase of interphase is a semiconservative process. This theory was confirmed by the experiments performed by Meselson and Stahl in 1958.
