Definition of Solvent

A solution is typically composed of two units which are solute and a solvent. The solvent is that substance that is present in a larger quantity and it is generally in the state of a liquid. On the other hand, that substance that exists in small quantity and is solid is known as the solute. The solvents are divided into two types i.e., polar and non-polar.

The polar solvents tend to form ions whereas the non-polar solvents do not lead to the formation of ions. The solvents are also categorized in the form of acidic, basic, amphoteric, and aprotic. Many organic compounds are also being used as solvents. The solvents are employed in many extractive processes, in the manufacturing of paints, tarnishes, and as industrial cleaners.

Examples of Solvents:

Water is known to be the universal solvent. Moreover, organic compounds like alcohols, esters, aromatic compounds are also used as solvents.
