Definition of Somatic Mutation

Somatic mutation is a specific type of alteration that happens in the genetic structure. This change in the genome cannot be inherited from the parents and therefore, cannot be transmitted to the offspring. They are not inherited by the offspring due to the fact that the mutation does not affect the germline cells.

But the mutation gets passed down to its progeny cells during the process of mitosis. Such a type of mutation is generally caused by the exposure to environmental factors like UV rays, carcinogens etc. The rate of somatic mutations is ten-fold higher than the germline mutations.
