Definition of Spontaneous Mutation

The spontaneous mutation is another type of mutation which is caused by numerous sources. Some of them include errors that have occurred while the replication of DNA, spontaneous lesions in the DNA and transposable elements in genetic material. These mutations are thought to occur with a probability of non-zero even if the cell is healthy and is free form contaminations.

The spontaneous mutations happen due to some specific changes. The change in the structure of DNA can be caused by the incorrect pairing of the nitrogenous bases, by the loss of purine base (adenine and guanine), by the insertion or deletion of certain regions etc.
