Definition of Start Codon

The first codon present in the transcript of messenger RNA that is translated by a ribosome is termed as the start codon. In the case of eukaryotes, archaea, mitochondria, and chloroplasts, the amino acid which is coded by the start codon is methionine. The sequence of the start codon in most of the cases is AUG.

The start codon comes before the 5’ untranslated region in the eukaryotes. On the other hand, there is a ribosome binding site present after the start codon in the case of prokaryotes. The alternative start codons are present in both prokaryotic as well as eukaryotic cells but they are different from the AUG codon.
