Taq polymerase is a type of an enzyme which is named after a thermophilic bacterium Thermus aquaticus which resides in hot springs and hydrothermal vents. It is a DNA polymerase I which has an ability to withstand a very high temperature. It tolerates such a high temperature at which almost all other proteins get denatured. It is generally abbreviated as Taq or Taq pol.
This enzyme is extensively used in a process that is known as polymerase chain reaction (PCR). It is a method through which the copies of short segments of DNA are made in a very short period of time.
