Definition of Temperate Phage

Temperate phages are that kind of bacteriophages that can adopt either lytic or lysogenic pathways of development. The lytic pathway is the same as that undergone by the virulent phages but in the case of the lysogenic pathway, the virus remains in its inactive form until the process of induction.

These temperate phages initiate their life cycle as soon as they enter the host cell. Then they tend to inject their genome in them and start producing copies of their genome as well as some other proteins. At this stage, the decision to enter whether the lytic or lysogenic cycle is made. If the conditions inside the host cell are poor, then the phage undergoes lysogenic cycle.
