Definition of Totipotent

Totipotent cells are one of the stem cells which have the ability to give rise to new individuals when they are given appropriate maternal support. These can also be defined as such cells that can form all bodily, germline, and extraembryonic tissues. These cells are quite unique as they have exceptional developmental potential as compared to the other stem cells.

As the totipotent cells can be isolated and cultured easily, so they are used as a tool in a number of therapeutics and researches. The zygotic cell which is diploid in nature is an example of a totipotent cell and this leads to a better understanding of the development of the early embryo.
