Definition of Transition Metals

The transition metals are those chemical elements whose valence electrons exist in two shells instead of one. The valence electrons are such electrons that take part in the formation of the chemical bonds i.e., ionic bonds, covalent bonds, etc. The transition metals are located in the middle of the periodic table and they occupy groups 3 through 12.

There are twenty-four elements that are transition metals, and they all are tough, strong, and shiny in nature. The melting and boiling points of these metals are usually high and they are excellent conductors of heat and electricity. The transition elements are also able to form a number of useful alloys.
