Definition of Transposon

The transposons belong to the class of genetic elements which are capable of jumping to different regions present within the genome. It is also known as a transposable element and a jumping gene. As they have an ability to change their locations, they can create as well as reverse the mutations and consequently, become responsible for changing the genetic identity of the cell and its genome size.

The phenomenon of transposition leads to such an incidence that the same genetic material gets duplicated. On the basis of functions, the TE are categorized into two classes i.e., class I TEs and class II TEs.
