Definition of Transversion

In the field of molecular biology, the term transversion is referred to as a point mutation that occurs in the sequence of DNA. It happens that a purine nitrogenous base (adenine or guanine) is replaced by a pyrimidine base (cytosine or thymine) or a single pyrimidine base is changed for a purine base.

This change in the base can either be a spontaneous phenomenon or it may be brought about by mutagens like ionizing radiation and alkylating agents. The transversions have very pronounced effects as a single ring is being substituted by a double ring and vice versa.
